A meeting between the CEO of the Phoenix Garden project Maxim Zakharov and Georgy Vitalyevich Dzhola, a candidate for the position of chief agronomist, was recently held in Astrakhan.
Purpose of the meeting
The main issue of discussion was the acquisition of a suitable land plot for industrial planting of paulownia.
Georgy Dzhola is a specialist in agroforestry and soil science, with deep knowledge of growing paulownia in the south of Russia, especially in the Astrakhan region. He runs his own tree nursery and heads the organization named after Professor V.V. Dokuchaev, aimed at greening the steppe, forest-steppe regions and the urban environment, as well as protecting the environment.
Why Astrakhan?
Astrakhan is an ancient economic and cultural center of Russia, known for its unique climate. The continental climate with hot summers and mild but humid winters create ideal conditions for the growth of paulownia. Temperatures in the region range from -20 to +40 degrees, which contributes to the rapid growth of this majestic tree.
Soils
The lands of the Astrakhan region, rich in black soil and influenced by the Volga River, provide the necessary moisture and nutrients for the roots of paulownia. Particularly successful areas, such as the outskirts of Astrakhan and its suburbs, harmoniously combine optimal climate and soil characteristics, which allows these trees to reach their full potential.
Taking into account the characteristics of the water pH of the soils in the Astrakhan region, Paulownia can be grown almost everywhere. The most optimal are Kamyzyaksky (soil pH 7.4), Akhtubinsky (soil pH 7.5) and Ikryaninsky districts (soil pH 7.5).
Water resources
The availability of irrigation and access to water plays an important role, since paulownia needs regular watering, especially in the first years of growth. There are rivers and canals in the Astrakhan region, which can provide the necessary conditions for irrigation.
Astrakhan, with its unique climate and favorable soil conditions, is ideal for industrial planting of the Shan Tong variety of paulownia.
Taking into account all the characteristics necessary for successful tree growth, the Phoenix Garden project team is considering the Kamyzyak and Ikryanoye districts of the Astrakhan region for the implementation of our project, because the soils there are not salty, not clayey and not sandy (with an ideal pH for growing Shan Tong) and have enough of the necessary humus supply.
Georgy Dzhola also drew attention to the fact that the warm and hot southern climate contributes to the rapid growth of this tree, and sufficient water resources in the Kamyzyak and Ikryanoe regions provide the necessary amount of moisture needed in the first years after planting.
An important aspect of the conversation was the environmental benefits of paulownia: it improves soil conditions and helps restore ecosystems. This makes the project not only profitable for investors, but also useful for the local economy and ecology.
Sincerely,
Phoenix Garden team
